‘Mexican stage show’

Marga Lopez
and Rodolfo Acosta, two of Mexico’s screen celebrities, carried on the true
show tradition at yesterday’s matinee at the Mayan theater despite the fact
that both performers were not feeling up to par.
Miss Lopez
suffered bronchitis and Acosta had just left the hospital. They announced,
however, they couldn’t disappoint their fans by not keeping the show date. With
the assistance of that lovable little comedian El Chicote, their performances
moved along nicely. Both Miss Lopez and Acosta will appear all week, along with
El Chicote.
The actors
won Academy Awards, in Mexico, in 1949 and have a huge following not only south
– of – the – border, but also in this country. In a brief backstage interview,
Acosta said, after wandering around Hollywood, he left for Mexico about five
years ago. He met with immediate success there and preferred to be “a big star
in a young motion picture industry than an ‘nothing’ in Hollywood.” That makes
sense.
Acosta also
offered the information that the Mexican Motion Picture is making greater
efforts to secure better story material. “Scholarships are being awarded, and
more writers from Hollywood are migrating to Mexico. Their material is
translated into Spanish,” Acosta said. This bright news may indicate that the
industry is stepping up to compete with other foreign picture units.
Making his
first stage appearance, Rudy Martin is a young vocalist who deserves attention
on the show bill. He has a colorful and appealing voice which should take him
places. Martin recently won a TV talent contest and has been signed up for a
Mexica picture. He sings both in English and Spanish.
Anything may
turn up in a Mexican stage show and so I was not surprised to find myself
reviewing the performance of a horse-shoe pitcher. I guess he was good, but my
knowledge of horse-shoe pitching is very limited to say the least.
The bill
includes a variety of eight acts. On the screen is “Salon Mexico,” featuring
Miss Marga and Acosta. The artistic photography is by Gabriel Figueroa and
Emilio Fernandez directed. For those who know their work, this is a
recommendation by itself.
