Candice Bergen tells a great story in her book “Knock Wood”. The actors all rode out to the location every morning in a station wagon. Bergen and the other actors complained non-stop about how awful the script was. “This script is terrible, the dialogue is terrible, no one could say these words” etc., etc. Finally, one morning Gene Hackman had enough. He blew up “Goddamnit! Quit complaining! You’re being paid to say those words and make them believable! That’s your fucking job!” Bergen learned a lesson and realized he was right. When Hackman spoke those words he did make them sound believable.
