South African actor, director and acting coach Greg
Melvill-Smith died at his Johannesburg, South African home from pancreatic
cancer on May 31, 2016. He was 55. Born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1961 Greg
completed a National Diploma in Drama at Pretoria Technikon in 1984. He joined
the Loft Theatre Company at NAPAC in 1985 and spent three years with this
innovative group. In 1988 he moved to Johannesburg and began his freelance
career where he appeared in over 54 professional theatre productions, playing
both lead and support characters.
He played substantial roles in over ten major television
series including ‘Wild at Heart’ for the Hallmark Channel and ‘Black Sails’ for
Starz Productions.
Greg appeared in numerous films, including “Mr. Bones”,
“Drum”, “The Bang Bang Club” and “Night Drive”.
Greg appeared in two Euo-westerns: ‘Guns of Honor’ (TV) (1993)
as Haze and “Hooded Angels” (2000) as the Confederate General.
