Remembering Vittorio Metz

Vittorio Metz was born on July 18, 1904 in Rome, Lazio, Italy. His long career as a humorist and writer began in the theater for children which led him to various collaborations in the field of journalism, film and television, where they found expression, inventiveness in a satirical vein.
 
He was a co-founder of the magazine Bertoldo in 1939.
 
In the 1950s Metz worked in television as a writer of musical comedies and variety shows; his name is often linked to that of Marcello Marchesi, with whom he wrote a number of successful programs (‘Ti conosco mascherina’ 1955; ‘La piazzetta’, 1956; the boys serial ‘Giovanna, la nonna del Corsaro Nero’). Always with the Marquis they worked on the script and with the director of some films Erminio Macario (“Imputato, alzatevi! 1939), with Totò (Totò cerca moglie” and “Totò Sheikh”, both 1950) and other successes of the Italian comedy; not so fortunate were their trials as directors (“Milan miliardaria”, 1951). He also published collections of maxims, proverbs and humorous books (Mia moglie a 45 giri, Roma in cocci).
 
Vittorio wrote the screenplay for only one Euro-western “The Nephews of Zorro” (1968) starring Franco and Ciccio.
 
Metz died on March 1, 1984 in Rome.
