Little Known Spaghetti Western Actors ~ Ernesto Calindri

[These daily posts will cover little known actors or people that have appeared in more recent films and TV series. Various degrees of information that I was able to find will be given and anything that you can add would be appreciated.]

Ernesto Calindri was born in Certaldo, Tuscany, Italy on February 5, 1909. Ernesto was the son of actor Manlio Calindri and actress Egloge Felletti. His sister was actress Fedora Calindro. Calindri married actress Roberta Mari (Yvi Mirenda) in 1939, and they remained together until her death in 1993. Calindri dedicated more than seventy years of his life to the theater, making his debut at the age of 19 alternating brilliant comedies and dramatic roles.

He appeared in 40 films between 1938 and 1989 and is often remembered in Italy for a series of TV commercials for a well-known brand of Italian artichoke-based bitter liqueur, Cynar, with the catchphrase "Contro il logorio della vita moderna" ("Assuaging the wear-and-tear of modern life") which showed him sitting at a café table surrounded by traffic drinking and reading the paper in relaxed fashion.

Calindri appeared in only one Spaghetti western as Colonel Custer in 1965’s “I due sergenti del generale Custer” (The Two Sergeants of General Custer) with Franco and Ciccio.

Ernesto Calindri died from a stroke suffered on June 9, 1999, in Milan, Lombardy, Italy. He was 90 years old.
