The Italian western (or "all'italiana", as the detractors say in the sixties) is born in a moment of crisis in our country, when the momentum of the economic miracle has been exhausted. This is why "For a Fistful of Dollars" by Leone and the films by Corbucci and Tessari are immediately read as the mirror of an arriving, cynical and consumerist society. But the Italian western also has a rebellious and third worldist vocation, as shown by the vein dedicated to the Mexican revolution inaugurated by "Quién sabe?" of Damiani. And at the same time admits an ironic and comic declination, which explodes in 1970 with "Lo chiamavano Trinità ..." characterizing its final phase. Starting from the debate of the time (Soldati, Moravia, Spinazzola, Kezich ...), this book reconstructs the reception of a complex and multifaceted genre, avoiding prejudices and dismantling many clichés. Using often forgotten sources and up-to-date re-readings, he intends to shed light on the cultural context, the relationship with the American western, the productive methods, the stylistic innovations, the diffusion outside Italy.
