Remembering Eliana Del Bazo


Eliano del Bazo was born on March 4, 1889 in Bueno Aires Argentina. Her parents were Italian immigrants of modest origins, after studying in Buenos Aires, she returned to Italy with her family in the mid-teen years, and here she became interested in acting.
 
She became active in theater and operetta, where she met he future husband, the tenor Guido Agnoletti.
 
She returned to work in 1944, shortly after the liberation of Rome, when she was called upon to interpret the Italian edition of “Fordyce nell'edizione” by Clare Boothe Luce and was one of the biggest hits of her career.
 
She carried out an intense theatrical activity with Sergio Tofano, Vittorio De Sica, Evi maltagliati and Luigi Cimara. In order to finance the courageous theater companies, she began working in films in 1935, getting a small part in the film “Casta diva”. Appearing in many other comedy films between 1930 and 1940, she received greater success in the cinema in the 1950s and 1960s, appearing in famous movies such as “Bravissimo” (1955), by Luigi Filippo D'Amico, “Ben- Hur” (1959), “Il moralista” (1959), “Totò, Fabrizi e i giovani d'oggi” (1960) “Il disco volante” (1964), her only Euro-western “Shango” (1970) as Tana and “Profondo rosso” (1975 ).
 
An excellent character actress, very tall, slender and aquiline nose, with casual and brisk manners, she was one of the busiest actresses in Italian cinema, boasting a career that spanned nearly fifty years.
 
In the sixties, although she became withdrawn after the death of her husband she was still sprightly and in good health she continued to work at full capacity, appearing frequently on television. She died on March 26, 1982 in Rome, while on vacation.
