Zvonimir Crnko was born on August 1, 1936 in Croatia. Although interested in soccer and music as a teenager he opted to become an actor. At the urging of one of his secondary teachers he went to Zabreb and enrolled in the Gavella Theatre Academy. After a short period on the stage in a production of Hamlet he began to appear on television playing rebellious young men. He became a star after appearances in the TV series "Kad je mac krojio pravdu" (1967) and "Sumornoj jeseni" (1969). Directors often stated he was difficult to work with the audience loved him and he appeared with Vanessa Redgrave and Jason Robards in 1969's "Isadora" billed as Ivan Tchenko. In 1979 he made "Covjek koga treba ubiti" directed by Veljko Bulajic and in 1980 he made "Izgubljeni zavicaj" directed by Ante Babaja both are considered cult classics. After the 1985 film "Crveni i crni" he began to receive some bad reviews and left the industry. He moved with his sister to Velika Gorica as a recluse. He refused interviews and lived the last years of his life in a wheelchair after losing a leg to diabetes. Crnko died on January 25, 2008 in Zagreb, Croatia.
