The focus is on women who ventured into new territory in the pioneering era of the 19th century and built a new life with hard work and had to fight for survival. It shows women who practice practical professions (doctor, midwife, seamstress), but also women with artistic professions (writer, photographer). On several occasions, the young lovers have been contrasted with a love affair in their parents' generation. Some characters, such as the village priest Lucas, the grocer's wife Doris, the officer and Major Calhoun, or the old Indian Nakota, appear in two films in the television series.
