Dust kicked up by the wind, saloons, revolvers, sheriffs and outlaws. The western continues to be one of the most recognizable themes in the online slot landscape, although its representation has changed significantly in recent years. The settings inspired by classic cinema have been joined by darker, stylized titles built around mechanics that transform duels and robberies into real elements of the gameplay.
Of course, there is no objective ranking of the best western slots. However, it is possible to identify some titles that are particularly representative in terms of graphic identity, technical characteristics and originality of the functions. From Hacksaw Gaming to Pragmatic Play, via Relax Gaming and Nolimit City, the Old West continues to be reinterpreted in very different ways.
Duel at Dawn, the duel becomes the center of the game
Among the most interesting productions of recent years is duel at dawn by Hacksaw Gaming, released in November 2024. The slot uses a 5×5 grid with 19 paylines and builds practically its entire identity around the contrast between sheriff and outlaw. The volatility is high, and one of the game's configurations features an RTP of 96.30%, although this value may vary depending on the version available from the operator.
The characteristic feature is the DuelReels function. When a VS symbol enters a combination and expands, the entire reel can turn into a Wild and a duel comes to life on the screen. Sheriff and Outlaw are associated with two different multipliers: the value of the winner of the match is applied to the reel concerned. Added to this dynamic is the Outlaw feature, in which a revolver can place additional Wilds on the grid, in addition to the Wild Wild West and Dusk 'Til Dawn bonuses. Hacksaw thus brings one of its best-known mechanics to a game that makes the classic confrontation at dawn its main narrative element.
Wanted Dead or a Wild, one of Hacksaw Gaming's iconic
westerns
Prior to Duel at Dawn, Hacksaw Gaming had already built a major part of their western aesthetic with Wanted Dead or a Wild. The game is spread over five reels and five rows, with 15 paylines, and offers a theoretical maximum win of 12,500x your stake. It is especially important because it was the first title of the studio to use the DuelReels mechanic, which later became one of the distinctive elements of the Hacksaw catalog.
The setting recovers numerous archetypes of the genre: duels in the street, wanted and train robberies. The three bonus modes also follow this setting. The Great Train Robbery exploits Wilds that remain on the grid, Dead Man's Hand introduces a two-phase structure based on the collection of Wilds and multipliers, while the bonus called Duel at Dawn increases the presence of VS symbols and therefore the potential frequency of the reels involved in the duels. The result is a deliberately dirty and stylized western, very far from the more traditional and colorful image proposed by other providers.
Wild West Gold, the western according to Pragmatic
Play
A decidedly more classic interpretation is that of Wild West Gold by Pragmatic Play. Here all the elements immediately associated with the genre return: revolvers, gold, cowboys and outlaws inserted in a five-reel, four-row structure.
One of the central aspects is the Wilds with 2x, 3x or 5x multipliers. When multiple Wilds participate in the same combination, their multipliers are added together. Three Scatters activate an eight-spin mode, in which the multiplier Wilds become sticky and therefore remain in their position. Additional Scatters can extend the feature. Pragmatic Play later expanded the concept with Wild West Gold Megaways, bringing the maximum number of ways to win to 117,649.
Wild West Duels and the Wild West built around bonuses
The same provider has taken up the setting with Wild West Duels, but shifting the focus towards a structure more based on special functions. The slot uses a 5×5 grid and 15 paylines, filling the reels with hats, boots and other symbols that are immediately traceable to the imagination of cowboys.
There are three main functions that define its operation. Lost Relic introduces Wilds and multipliers that can be used on subsequent spins, Duel offers ten spins with expandable Wild reels and multipliers tied to the outcome of a match, while Beer Free Spins uses multiplier Wilds that remain active during the ten spins of the feature. Compared to Wild West Gold, therefore, the theme does not change radically, but is used to build a greater variety of situations within the same slot.
Money Train 4, outlaws and robberies on the tracks
The western can also take on almost steampunk characteristics. This is the case of Relax Gaming's Money Train series and in particular of Money Train 4, a chapter published in 2023 that took the formula developed in previous games to the extreme.
The protagonists are once again bandits and outlaws, but the classic town of the Far West leaves room above all for the railway. Relax Gaming claims more than twenty features and a theoretical maximum win of 150,000x your bet. The main mechanics include respins, symbols with multipliers and the Money Cart Bonus Round, while characters with different abilities intervene by progressively changing the structure of the round. It is a demonstration of how the western imagery can work even without limiting itself to the traditional scheme of the duel in front of the saloon.
Tombstone and the darker side of the western
Nolimit City followed an even different path, transforming the western into something decidedly darker. The Tombstone saga has become one of the studio's most recognizable thematic lines over the years. The first Tombstone dates back to 2019, followed by productions such as Deadwood, El Paso Gunfight, Tombstone R.I.P., Tombstone No Mercy and Tombstone Slaughter.
Tombstone R.I.P. remains one of the most representative episodes of this philosophy. Released in 2022, it uses an atypical reel structure and integrates proprietary Nolimit City mechanics such as xNudge and xSplit. Its benchmark RTP is 96.08%, while the theoretical maximum win comes in at 300,000x your stake. More than the traditional cinematic western, its atmosphere recalls a brutal and decadent world in which the border with horror becomes deliberately thin.
The series also continues to be updated. Tombstone Begins
brought the story back to its origins in 2026, taking on the role of prequel.
The game introduces a dynamic in which a winning combination can generate a
respin and keep some symbols locked on the grid, showing how Nolimit City
continues to use the western universe as a terrain to experiment with new game
structures.
