Who Are Those Guys? ~ Ugo Fangareggi

Italian character actor Ugo Fangareggi was born in Genoa, Italy on January 30, 1938. Fangareggi worked as a dental technician when in 1961 he was noticed by Luigi Squarzina who chose him to act in the play “Ciascuno a suo modo”.

Ugo later moved to Rome to devote himself to a professional acting career and in a short time he became one of the most active character actors in Italian cinema. Mainly devoted to humorous roles, he is best known for the role of Mangold in Mario Monicelli's “For Love and Gold”. Fangareggi was also active in several successful TV series such as ‘Il signore della truffa’ alongside Gigi Proietti in the role of Osvaldo Franzoso.

Ugo had an amateur theater company based in Ornaro, a hamlet in the municipality of Torricella in Sabina, called The Independents of Ugo Fangareggi which included Bruno Di Mattei, Ivan Maistrello and Edoardo Spallazzi.

Fangareggi was sometimes credited with the aliases Hugh Fangar-Smith and Ugo Mudd and William Spofford.

His long angular face made him instantly recognizable in the seven Spaghetti westerns he appeared no matter what pseudonym or alias he was credited under.

On 20 October 2017, Fangareggi died in Rome after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease, aged 79.
