Voices of the Spaghetti Western – “Buffalo Bill Hero of the Far West”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to be paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as well-known as the actors they voiced.

English voices of the Spaghetti Western - Bret Morrison

Bret Morrison was born on May 5, 1912 in Chicago, Illinois. He was an American actor best known as the voice of the mysterious crusader for law and order on radio's The Shadow. He was also a popular cabaret singer. Morrison entered radio during the 1930s while he was still in Chicago High School. He began with The First Nighter Program. In 1937, he was in the cast of Lucky Girl, a Monday-Friday drama broadcast on WGN in Chicago.

Morrison portrayed the Shadow longer than any other actor, spending 10 years in the role in two separate runs. Bill Johnstone played the Shadow until early 1943. Morrison replaced Johnstone in April, 1943, continuing until 1944. John Archer (1944–45) was followed by Steve Courtleigh (1945). Morrison then returned from 1945 until 1954. For many, he was the definitive voice of the Shadow, though his delivery was much less sinister than Orson Welles, who also portrayed the Shadow during its first full year run.

At age 66, Morrison died of a heart attack on September 25, 1978. He was found slumped over the steering wheel of his parked car on a Hollywood street where he had stopped for shopping after taping an episode of Heartbeat Theater. It was believed 107-degree temperatures in a Southern California heat wave may have prompted Morrison's heart attack. He was 66.

MORRISON, Bret [5/5/1912, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. – 9/25/1978, Hollywood, California, U.S.A.] – radio, film, TV, voice actor, married to actress, singer Sylvia Syms (Sylvia Blagman) [1916-1992] (1946-1953), father of Edward Morrison.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – [English voice of José Montoya]

Hungry for an old-fashioned Spaghetti Western?

Spaghetti Western Wednesdays

We're excited to announce the return of Spaghetti Western Wednesdays! Every Wednesday night through March, come and enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring spaghetti, salad, bread/butter and our choice of an old western to watch. Doors & food at 6:00 pm / Film at 6:30 pm.

Spaghetti-Western Wednesday presents some of the more obscure films from Hollywood's most cherished genre: The Western.

Film has always been “A reflection of our society, and its views and values at the time.”

Therefore, we present these films not as an endorsement of their content, which do not accurately represent Native peoples and oftentimes include outright racist depictions of these characters, but as an opportunity to dialogue about the ways in which the same films might be viewed today.

We welcome you to the Tin Pan for this series of an American staple of cinema. These classic films hold an indelible importance in our cinema and our history, they also have the potential to do damage if not viewed within the understanding of the tapestry of our ever evolving country.

We welcome you to watch, perhaps laugh and to think, to be entertained and we invite you to honor the original Peoples of this land.

Tin Pan Theater in downtown Bend is where you need to be each Wednesday night, from now until March. $25 gets you a spaghetti buffet meal and a low-budget Western film shot in Italy! How fun!

Tin Pan Theater

Address: 869 Northwest Tin Pan Alley, Bend, Oregon 97703

Cinecittà celebrates Claudia Cardinale at The Museum of Modern Art, New York

Cinecitta News

By Nicole Bianchi

1/20/2023

An international celebration, worthy of a profile that is not drawn only within the confines of Italian cinema, although it has contributed to writing its history: Claudia Cardinale is the spearhead of a celebration that makes its first stop in Rome – this morning at the Barberini Cinema –, about to land at the MoMA in New York, from February 3 to 21, 2023

In collaboration with Cinecittà, Rome, MoMA celebrates the Tunisian-born Italian actress and women’s rights activist Claudia Cardinale with a retrospective that spans her nearly 70-year career, featuring approximately 20 films, including 12 restorations. Though internationally worshiped for her voluptuous beauty—and invariably compared in movie star magazines with Brigitte Bardot (her private life was consumed by a voracious public, including a notorious profile by Alberto Moravia) — Cardinale has brought an emotional vulnerability and intelligence to her many varied roles (she is fluent in Italian, French, English, Spanish, Sicilian dialect, and Tunisian Arabic) and she has collaborated with filmmakers as diverse as Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti, Abel Gance and Alexander Mackendrick, Sergio Leone, Werner Herzog, and Richard Brooks. In addition to such classics as Visconti’s Rocco and His Brothers and The Leopard, Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West, and Fellini’s 8 1⁄2, this retrospective includes her work with Mauro Bolognini (Il Bell’Antonio, La Viaccia, Senilita, and Libera, Amore Mio!) Valerio Zurlini (The Girl with the Suitcase), Pasquale Squitieri (Atto di Dolore), and Marco Bellocchio (Enrico IV), as well as a selection of international films including Richard Brooks’s The Professionals, Alexander Mackendrick’s Don’t Make Waves, Manoel de Oliveira’s Gebo and the Shadow, Nadine Trintignant’s L’été prochain, and Boris Despodov’s Twice Upon a Time in the West

*The festival consists of 20 film titles, including two other important restorations made by Cinecittà: https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/5550; curated by Paola Ruggiero and Camilla Cormanni, for Cinecittà, and by Joshua Siegel, curator of the Department of Film - The Museum of Modern Art, New York. For the occasion, Cinecittà and Electa have edited the aforementioned volume Claudia Cardinale. L'indomabile, curated by Claudia Squitieri with texts by Giorgio Armani, Barbara Corsi, Caterina d'Amico, Masolino d'Amico, Silvia d'Amico Bendicò, René de Ceccatty, Jean A. Gili, Julia Guillon, Cristina Jandelli, Sergio Toffetti, accompanied by rare images selected from various archives (Archivio Luce, Archivio del Museo del Cinema di Torino, Reporters Associati & Archivi).
