Little Known Spaghetti Western actors ~ Antonio Cuenca

[These daily posts will cover little known actors or people that have appeared in more recent films and TV series. Various degrees of information that I was able to find will be given and anything that you can add would be appreciated.]

Our Antonio Cuenca is not to be confused with another Spanish actor of the same name born Antonio Cuenca Ruiz in Madrid in 1984.

Antonio Cuenca was born sometime most likely in the early1940s. He appeared in eleven films between 1964 and 1990.

Among those eleven films were two Spaghetti westerns: “El séptimo de caballeria” (Charge of the 7th) in 1964 and “I due sergenti del generale Custer” (The Two Sergeants of General Custer) in 1965.

I can find no biographical information on him.

Hammond Innes's novel CAMPBELL’S KINGDOM, which had a Northwestern adventure storyline, was published in 1952 and had come about from his research into the Canadian oil boom of the late 1940s. It became a bestseller. The story was serialised as “Nothing to Lose”. Producer director team Betty Box & Ralph Thomas quickly purchased the rights and in August 1952, they ventured to the Canadian Rockies, with Ranks intended to film it there. In the end they shot the film in the Dolomites in Italy. Interestingly Innes’ earlier novel “The Lonely Skier” (1947), had been set in the Dolomites. It had been filmed by CAMPBELL’S KINGDOM’s producer Betty Box’s brother Sydney, as “Snowbound” (1948, UK) for Gainsborough Pictures. They got British crime novelist Eric Ambler to work on an early draft which went unused. During filming three of the principals, Michael Craig, Stanley Baker & Sid James, all brought along their wives and all three were pregnant.

Matinee idol Dirk Bogarde had just had a string of hits with both “Doctor in the House” (1954, UK) and “Doctor at Sea” (1955, UK), and Rank delayed the start of CAMPBELL’S KINGDOM, so he could do a third film in the series, “Doctor at Large” (1957, UK). This would take advantage of a newfound audience. He was once again paired with the gruff James Robertson Justice, his co-star from the ‘Doctor’ movies to good effect. Justice & Michael Craig, then took over from Bogarde on the fourth “Doctor in Love” (1960, UK). Bogarde returned in the inevitable “Doctor in Distress" (1963, UK) which re teamed him with actress Barbara Murray. Dirk Bogarde was next in the shot in Spain THE SINGER NOT THE SONG.

Born in India to British parents, Michael Craig ‘s family moved from England to Canada when he was eleven years old where he picked up his distinctive ‘American’ accent. Following CAMPBELL’S KINGDOM Craig & Robertson Justice reunited on “Doctor in Love” (1960, UK) for Rank.

Stanley Baker later played the villain in Duccio Tessari’s ZORRO (1975).

Michael Craig soon after starred in THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND that was shot in both the UK and Spain.

Sidney James later starred in CARRY ON COWBOY (1965), while Robert Brown played “M” in the 1980’s James Bond films (1983-1989).

The American magazine Variety called it "virtually a British western. It is a straightforward, virile, action-packed yarn with ample excitement and mounting drama”

Spaghetti Western Locations for “The Forgotten Pistolero”

We finish our search for film locations for "The Forgotten Pistolero". Sebastian catches up to Thomas and they fight. Thomas tries to bribe Seabastian by offering him money. Thomas also tells Rafael that Anna wasn’t the mother of Sebastian and Isabella. Thomas pulls out a knife and stabs Rafael. Sebastian then calls out Thomas by name. As Sebastian approaches with the hacienda in flames behind him, Thomas goes for Rafael’s gun, in front of him on the ground. Sebastian shoot at the pistol and Thomas throws his knife but misses and Sebastian shoots him in the shoulder. Thomas picks up the gun and aims at Sebastian only to receive another bullet in the leg and finally a bullet in the heart.

In the meantime Rafael has gone after Isabella who he sees wandering aimlessly down the upstairs balcony. He finds her and is joined by Sebastian and the three leave while the hacienda crumbles and burns in the background.

All of the interior scenes were filmed in Rome according to Leonard Mann.

Syn: Mercenary Toorop takes the high-risk job of escorting a ‘Tibetan’ type Nun and her young charge, from a Noelite Convent in Central Asia, to Russia, then through Canada to New York. Little does he know that she is host to an organism that a religious cult and a rogue mafia thug both want to harvest to produce a genetically modified ‘Messiah’.

Comm: [Filmed at Narvik, Norway, Torneträsk, Sweden (frozen lake as the Bering Strait), Milovice, Czech Republic (all Russia and Canada) and Kiruna, Sweden. Studios de Bry - 2 avenue de l'Europe, Bry-sur-Marne, France (interiors), from June 2006 to February 2007].

BABYLON A.D. was based on the third novel in the series which was entitled “Babylon Babies” (12/99). In the book, it was set in 2014, but for the film that was advanced to 2017, to set it even further into the future. Halfway through the ragged trio board a submarine that carries them across the Bering Strait between Asia and Canada. They make a long snowy trek across Canada which is breathtaking (even if it wasn’t shot there). When they arrive at a nearby Canadian airport they take a flight to NY, with no flag waving. Toorop during the journey pulls out a digital map and locates their next destination, which is shown to be south, but unspecified, depending on the angle.

BABYLON A.D. is a clever blending of Akira Kurosawa’s YOJIMBO (1961, Japan), by way of A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (1964, Italy/West Germany /Spain), and the Christ story’s virgin birth, with the virginal ‘Aurora, with child. The unkempt Toorop like Toshiro Mifune & Clint Eastwood (and Franco Nero in DJANGO, 1966, Italy/Spain), before him, has had his sword/gun hand disabled. Believed dead, Toorop then rises from a coma five days later. He is then fitted with a synthetic glowing skin glove to give him support, much like the leatherette cast that Eastwood donned to protect his broken hand in “For a Few Dollars More” (1965, Italy/West Germany/Spain). BABYLON A.D. and co. appears not to have credited anyone for its inspiration(s), or spoke of them, unlike the official remake of “Yojimbo”, the Bruce Willis gangster-tumbleweed western “Last Man Standing” (1996, US), which wore its approval on its bloody sleeve. It is not known how much of “Yojimbo” novelist Maurice G. Dantec did borrow for his novels.

BABYLON A.D. was made between the Vin Diesel movies THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK (06/2004) and “The Fast and the Furious” vineuels 5, 6 and 7 (2006-15, US).

Malaysian martial-arts star Michelle Yeoh appeared between her two best known films, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000, China) and the filmed in Montreal THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR (2008).

French actress Mélanie Thierry was next in the futurist thriller “Largo Winch” (11/08), the feature film that was a kind of follow-up to LARGO WINCH: The Series (2002, France/Canada). Both were based on the graphic novels of Jean Van Hamme & Philippe Francq. Ms. Thierry gave birth to her 1st child at age 26, on May 24, 2008, a full year after production of BABYLON A.D.

Lambert Wilson had co-starred in NORTH STAR (1996, Italy/France/Norway) the Alaskan set snowie. Fellow actors Gérard Depardieu & Charlotte Rampling (British born-living in France) round out the French cast.

Even though it's longer, the "StudioCanal" cut of BABYLON A.D. does not include the climactic chase scene between the Noelite soldiers and Toorop, or the final glimpse of Toorop with Aurora's children, which the English prints do.

Director Kassovitz in the end disowned the finished 20th Century Fox version of the film instead, claiming it did not represent his intended vision. Say no more.

French born Canada based novelist Maurice G. Dantec died June 25, 2016, in Montreal from a heart attack.

Spaghetti Western Trivia: - Luis Galicia and the The Rojo Hacienda

In our hand, the original raised drawing of the House of the Rojos in “A Fistful of Dollars” by Sergio Leone, starring Clint Eastwood, and shot under the original title of “Ray the Magnificent.”

With the great Jose Luis Galicia, loved and admired, preparing the conference about his career as a production designer, art director, decorator, costume designer and decorator. By the way, that in "A Fistful of Dollars" had the courage to stop filming, removing the doors and windows of the decor, for non-payment of the producers.

Jose Luis Galicia, probably the last living friend of Pablo Ruiz Picasso, is also a prestigious painter who has exhibited in important museums and galleries in New York, Paris or London, with numerous paintings currently in the National Museum Queen Sofia, and author of the paintings of the ceilings of the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid.

Galicia appears accredited as a decorator/art director in one hundred and ninety-seven films, plus those he made as a builder with Jaime Perez Cubero. From "The Revenge of the Fox" to "The Young Picasso", going through "Varietes", "Condemned to Live", "The French Orchard", "The Man of Rio Malo" or "The Crimes of Morgue Street". He is responsible, together with Cubero, for the construction and decoration of the first stable western town in Spain, the one of Hoyo de Manzanares, as well as the ranch of "The Falcon and the Dam" in La Pedriza.

In the Dehesa of Navalvillar de Colmenar Viejo, the Cubero-Galicia tandem built and decorated the great Confederate Fort for "Before Death Comes", and several ranches, the one of "Seven guns for the McGregor", the one of "The Mark of Cain", or the one of "Oilers", of which you can still see the large brick fireplace, currently last remains of the decorations.

With Victor Matellano and the original drawing for the Rojo Hacienda.

The Aprilia countryside becomes a western village, with saloons, sheriff, bank, duels and chases on horseback

il Caffe.tv

6/14/2025

The countryside of Aprilia becomes a western village, complete with a saloon, church, prison, bank, duels and chases on horseback.

Not in a film set, but in the western village of Aprilia, where the new edition of "COLT: A Tale of Two Cities", the largest Italian event inspired by the Italian western, is staged.

Over 200 participants, including characters and extras, will transform this corner of the Pontine countryside into the Lone Town of the 1800s, the scene of intrigues, duels, raids and missions on horseback.

The project, born from an idea of Tiziano Carnevale and produced by Mauro Canavese's Spaghetti LARP APS cultural association, in collaboration with director Giovanni Bufalini, is not just an event, but a real live role-playing game that every year involves fans from all over Italy.

The village, with more than 4,000 square meters of floor space and over twenty buildings – from the saloon to the prison, from the bank to the post office – represents the largest permanent western-themed setting in the country.

Aprilia becomes Lone Town, in the Old West between justice and outlaws

The new chapter of the saga sees the city of Lone Town grappling with the aftermath of an era of chaos.

The last elections have brought back an apparent calm, but new threats loom, between expanding powers and tensions that have never subsided.

There will be missions outside the city limits, horse chases, stockpiles of values and raids, in a narrative that evolves dynamically according to the choices of the participants.

The city is also enriched with new structures: a bank, a private security agency in search of new gunslingers, a smoke shop and a church with a newly built bell tower, a symbolic place for those seeking redemption or spiritual refuge.

An experience for everyone

COLT doesn't need expensive costumes or theatrical experience: each participant builds their own character and lives their story.

Whether you choose to be a preacher, a bandit, a corrupt sheriff or a simple stranger, each role is part of a choral plot where "every choice has a weight".

Useful info

COLT – A Tale of Two Cities will be held from 3 to 5 October 2025 at the Pegaso Ranch in Aprilia (via Pantanelle 104).

Voices of the Spaghetti Western ~ “A Few Bullets More”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to be paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as well-known as the actors they voiced.

Today we’ll cover “A Few Bullets More”

William 'Billy the Kid' Bonney – Peter Lee Lawrence (I) Luciano Melani, (S) Jesus Nieto, (G) Thomas Danneberg

Traudel Haas  (1945 -    )

Gertraude Haas was born on September 3, 1945, in Berlin. Germany. She is a German actress and voice actress. After ten years as an ensemble member of the Berlin Schiller and Schlosspark Theatre, film dubbing formed her professional focus. Haas' voice is best known for numerous dubbing of American character actresses Mia Farrow, Annette Bening, Diane Keaton, Kathleen Turner and Kristin Scott Thomas.

The daughter of an opera singer, she left school at the age of 15 without graduating from high school. Thanks to a scholarship, she began a three-year training at the Max Reinhardt School of Acting in Berlin from 1961 to 1964 as the youngest student at the age of fifteen and a half. From 1967 to 1977 she was a member of the ensemble of the Berlin Schiller and Schlosspark Theatre.

Parallel to her work at the theatre, the dubbing of foreign-language films and series roles was another focus from the mid-1960s onwards, which Haas only interrupted for a temporary job as a teacher during the 1980s. Notable works include the dubbing of Mia Farrow in “Rosemary's Baby” (1968), “The Great Gatsby” (1974) and “The Last Unicorn” (1982), Katharine Ross in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969), Kathy Bates in “Green Fried Tomatoes” (1991), Frances McDormand in “Fargo” (1996), Rene Russo in “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1999) and Cate Blanchett in “Heaven” (2002).

Haas lives in Berlin and is the mother of two daughters. Her younger daughter Sun is also occasionally active as a dubbing actress.

Little Known Spaghetti Western actors ~ Garvin Cross

[These daily posts will cover little known actors or people that have appeared in more recent films and TV series. Various degrees of information that I was able to find will be given and anything that you can add would be appreciated.]

Garvin Cross is a Canadian stunt coordinator and stuntman born in 1970. Born with the drive to take risks, and the skills to pull them off, Garvin Cross has enjoyed a successful career creating those ‘wow’ moments on the big and small screen.  One of his first stunt credits was working on a 1991 Chuck Norris feature The Hitman.  From that point on his phone has not stopped ringing. With over 150 credited and uncredited stunts it’s only natural that his experience would lead to designing, developing and coordinating stunts.  One memorable film Garvin coordinated is Lost Boys: The Tribe, where his out of the box thinking won praise from the directors and producers of this sci-fi action feature. And when big bang stunts are back seat to fun gags in family movies involving props, actors and animals, Garvin has done those too.

Garvin has appeared in two Euro-western productions as a barfly in a 1990 episode of ‘Bordertown’ and performing stunts in 2007’s “BloodRayne II: Deliverance”.

The biggest western event in Italy is back

From 3 to 5 October 2025 COLT returns to the gates of Rome: "A Tale of Two Cities", over 200 characters will give life to the epic of the Italian western in the largest and most important event of its kind in Italy, which will be played as always in a unique location, with lots of news.

Designed and built by Tiziano Carnevale, the western village of Aprilia (LT) is with its over 4,000 square meters of extension the largest and most detailed in Italy, over twenty different walkable structures from the classic saloon to the prison, passing from the post office to the armory. Inside, the staff of Mauro Canavese's Spaghetti LARP APS cultural association in collaboration with director Giovanni Bufalini have created COLT, the largest western-themed live role-playing game in Italy.

A NEW LONELY CITY

The previous episode has seen a series of situations evolve, which have left the city in chaos, and now it will be difficult to restore order in that place where anarchy really does not seem to suffer the hard blows that justice has inflicted on those who wanted, without succeeding, to take possession of the city. Free elections have appointed a new mayor, and the law seems to have eliminated the criminal gangs that have sown panic within Lone Town, but the fire under the embers burns, you can feel the heat. In the moment of need, the citizens have responded in the best possible way, uniting against the criminals, but now the looming threats could be even greater than the previous ones.

Strong men and women are needed, inside and outside the city, since raids outside the boundaries of Lone Town will also be planned, it will be enough to know how to ride to participate in equestrian missions, chases, valuables but also raids.

The city is constantly expanding, there will be a new bank (certainly attractive even for criminals) but also a new private security agency in search of fast and determined guns of the expanding Brotherhood. There is also a new smokehouse, where you can talk about business or simply relax. The recently built church has been improved with the new bell tower, a perfect place for those seeking redemption.
