The period between 1964 and 1984 was surprisingly rich for Italian genre cinema, otherwise known as cinema bis or exploitation cinema in its less glorious form, but also and perhaps above all for the film music that illustrated it. For the first time, a book written in French lists in an orderly manner the Italian composers who created these soundtracks, some of which have become cult classics. Alongside the unavoidable signatures such as Ennio Morricone, Riz Ortolani, or Armando Trovajoli, many names appear, less known to the general public. Some have made anecdotal contributions, but others have really been on an equal footing with the masters of the genre. For each of them, the reader will be able to consult a summary biography followed by a proposal of their most interesting and significant soundtracks. With two hundred and fifty composers presented, one thousand five hundred films evoked, a thousand original soundtracks selected, commented and evaluated by an interest rating, this book is a true guide to the film music of Italian genre cinema. It has no other claim than to allow moviegoers and soundtrack enthusiasts to know a little more and make new discoveries.

Louis de Ny is a writer and historian of contemporary music in Italy, specializing in Italian progressive rock and the film music of post-1960 Italian cinema. He is the author of two books on Italian progressive rock (Le Petit Monde du Rock Progressive Italien in 2015 and Plongée au coeur du Rock Progressive Italien in 2018). He also wrote Via Lumière, the authorized biography of Patrick Djivas, the historic bassist of Area and Premiata Forneria Marconi, released in France in 2020 and translated into Italian in 2022. In 2022, he published, Giallo & Rosso, a one-of-a-kind book detailing the connections between Italian genre cinema of the seventies and Italian progressive rock of the same era. In 2024, he wrote Goblin, Diabolus in Musica, the story of this Italian rock band that owes its fame to such iconic film soundtracks as those of Profondo Rosso, Suspiria and Zombi. You can find Louis de Ny on his facebook page (StoriaProg) as well as on his blog in French and Italian: Le Petit Monde du Rock Progressive Italien (rockprogressifitalien.blogspot.com).
