Who Are Those Guys? ~ Fred Coplan

Vladan Popov as born in Dubrovnik, Kingdom of Serbia on March 5, 1921. He was a doctor and then a sailor arriving in Rome in 1960 where he became an actor under the name Fred Coplan. He appeared in over films including an appearance in John Huston’s “The Bible” in 1966. He would go on to appear in nine Euro-westerns usually playing henchmen and gang members.

After an adventurous life he moved to France and began to paint and sculpt he would make small figures from rocks and pebbles assembled, glued and painted with a "carnival" look. He also made paintings "in relief": a mixed technique of pebbles painted and glued on colored and naive paintings expressing the distress of a man alone, old and sick. His first (collective) exhibition took place in May 2001 at the Anatole Jakovsky Museum of Naive Art in Nice.

A short documentary was made of his life in 2009 by Jean-Michel Zazzi which is available on You Tube and I have linked at the bottom of this post.

Vladan Popov died on August 11, 2004, Antibes, Alpes-Maritimes, Alpes-Côte d’azur France.
