Jean-Claude Carrière, the prolific French screenwriter
and novelist who was Oscar-nominated for “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,”
“That Obscure Object of Desire” and “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie,”
died February 8, 2021 at his home in Paris. He was 89. Often collaborated with Luis
Buñuel, Louis Malle and Milos Forman. Carrière co-wrote the screenplay and
several songs for 1965’s “Viva Maria! With Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau.
