Antonio de la Santisima Trinidad Pica Serrano was born on
March 21, 1933 in Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz, Andalucia, Spain. His family
moved to San Fernando, Las Palmas, Sevilla,
where he grew up, in Cadiz and Barcelona. Pica completed
military service in Algeria where he then worked for eleven years in the oil
business working in a submarine.
In 1961 he returned to Spain and then settled in London
where as Antonio Pica he started his acting career when he was noticed by the
director of Moro Studies. A few days later he made a screen test and made his
debut on television. It was a golden age in which he modeled for the English
Court and recorded announcements for ‘Veteran and Iberia’, in which he was seen
as an attractive rider galloping on a white thoroughbred.
His features and poise made him look Anglo and together
with his stylish ways, he was naturally photogenic, Pica was an icon for many
agencies for whom he worked interspersed with his appearances in over 50 films.
He went to America where he lived for a decade until the
filmmaking of co-productions went into decline: Pica spent long periods in
Spain, where he worked with many of the movie stars in Spain and foreign films.
Pica has appeared in 11 Euro-westerns from “A Fistful of Dollars” (1964) to
“Cipolla Colt” (aka “Spaghetti Western) in 1975. Most recently he starred in
the 2012 western short film “The Cockroach”.
Today we celebrate Antonio Pica’s 80th
birthday.
