In the film “100 Rifles” a fight scene breaks out between
Lyedecker played by Jim Brown and Yaqui Joe played by Burt Reynolds at the edge
of a cliff. Deemed too dangerous for star Jim Brown the producers were going to
higher John Wayne’s long time stunt double Chuck Roberson with instructions to
the director, Tome Gries, to put black-face on him. Burt Reynolds refused to do
the scene under those conditions stating it was not proper to put black-face on
him, stating “Those days are gone, you better get a black stuntman here right
now.”
When the production manager stated it was not in the
budget, and "Fox would never go for it" Reynolds paid $500 out of his
own pocket to pay for a black stuntman.
