[These daily posts will cover little known actors or people that have appeared in more recent films and TV series. Various degrees of information that I was able to find will be given and anything that you can add would be appreciated.]
Liana Del Balzo was born on March 4, 1899, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Liana was married to Guido Agnoletti, a well-known opera singer in the 1920's and 1930's. Due to various spellings in credits it is unclear if Liana was an abbreviation of Eliana or Giuliana.
Del Balzo appeared in Italian films from at least the 1930's until the end of the 1970's. Her known film acting career began in 1939, with one role unconfirmed from 1935, but she was active in theatre since at least as early as 1923, so it's quite possible she started appearing in films before this, maybe even during the silent era and also maybe in South America. She generally played uncredited bit parts, with or without dialogue, but from time to time she would get cast in larger character roles. Even from her earliest known roles she almost always was cast in mature roles such as noblewomen, mothers or governesses. In all she appeared in at least 100+ films during her long career.
She was a close friend of Claire B. Lewis, head of American diplomacy in Italy in the 1950s.
As Liana Del Balzo she appeared in four Spaghetti westerns: “Una signora dell’ovest” (Girl of the Golden West) in 1942 as a member of the audience, “I gemelli del Texas” (Twins from Texas) in 1965 as Malanza/Mackenzie’s mother “E per tetto un cielo di stelle” (A Sky Full of Stars for a Roof) as a mourner in 1968, and in “Shango, la pistola infallible (Shango) in 1970 as Tana/Peno)
