Sergio Endrigo was an Italian composer, singer and actor. He was born in Pola, Istria, Italy on June 15, 1933. He has been often compared—for style and nature—to authors of the so-called "Genoa School" like Gino Paoli, Fabrizio De André, Luigi Tenco, and Bruno Lauzi.
His father was the painter and sculptor Romeo Endrigo [1889-1939] and his mother Claudia Smareglia, he spent his childhood in Istria. In February 1947, due to the events following the end of the Second World War, and the consequent cession of about half of the territory of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region to Yugoslavia, he was forced to leave his hometown together with his mother and to move as a refugee first to Brindisi and then to Venice. To help his mother financially, he interrupted his high school studies and started working (among other things, also as a porter at the Hotel Excelsior and as a bellhop at the Mostra del Cinema ); In this period he also began to play the guitar , and in a short time he found an engagement as singer and double bass player in various orchestras, including that of Ruggero Oppi , until he joined Riccardo Rauchi 's ensemble , where he met Riccardo Del Turco (who became his brother in law); it was precisely with this orchestra that his recording debut as a singer took place in 1959, with a 45 rpm extended play which included “Hold My Phone” and “Hot Ice”.
In 1963 he married Maria Giulia ‘Lula’ Bartolocci [1942-1994] who under the alias Plumrose co-wrote with him several of his songs. They had a child, the production secretary, Claudia Endrigo in 1965.
He won the Sanremo Music Festival in 1968 with the song "Canzone per te", sung with Roberto Carlos. The same year he represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1968 with the song "Marianne." His hits also include "L'arca di Noè", "Io che amo solo te" and "Adesso sì".
Sergio sang the popular main theme “A Man Alone” for the Spaghetti western “The Brute and the Beast” (1966).
