When Fraga became the stage for Spaghetti westerns [part 7 of 8]

Between the years 1965 and 1972, two Catalan production companies made about seventy films of the spaghetti western genre in the West Bank. We’ll tell you about it.

The end of the Spaghetti western

At the beginning of the seventies of the last century, the western in general hit rock bottom. The viewer, saturated, preferred James Bond-style spy and action films, or kung fu fights from Hong Kong. From the years 1972 and 1973, Western cinema was no longer profitable. 'Los Fabulosos de Trinidad' (1972) and 'Ninguno de los tres se llamaba Trinidad' (1973), both by Iquino, put an end to the Catalan western. A real estate company bought the IFI studios in Paral·lel, and the half-abandoned ones in Balcázar had a sad movie ending. José Ulloa detailed it this way: "They took advantage of the sets to burn them for the filming of Esplugues Citi's last film, 'Le llamaban Calamidad'."

The spaghetti western was over, but the cinema continued. Iquino started the denuncia cinema with 'Aborto criminal' (1973) and 'Chicas de alquiler' (1974). Afterwards, both Balcázar and Iquino opted for a genre that would bring money for a few more years, the 'destape'.

  1. The American western ruled the mid 40s and the 50s.The Spaghetti western ruled the 60s, and then it turned into Giallo (spaguetti horror) with many of the actors then in the western now in the slasher. The spaguetti western of the 70s and the spaghetti horror of the 60s were awful. Each one in its decade . That´s why in the 70s Sergio Martino, Antonio Bido , etc ...made incredible horror films.
