These daily posts will cover little known actors or people that have appeared in more recent films and TV series. Various degrees of information that I was able to find will be gven and anything that you can add would be appreciated.
Luana Alcañiz was born Lucrecia Ana Úbeda Pubillones on May 8, 1906, in Madrid, Spain. She was the granddaughter of Santiago Pubillones, the brother of the founder of the Pubillones Circus of Cuba, and daughter of the actress Marina Alcañiz [1883-1965]. Luana spent her youth in Cuba and, after studying dance, debuted at age sixteen as a dancer and singer and was known as "La Flor de España". She performed in clubs and theaters in New York and formed an artistic partnership with Juan Puerta, a dancer she married.
After shooting some short films, in 1930 she signed a
contract with Fox and in 1932 she toured America in Al Jolson's company. She
worked in Hollywood until the early 1940s, when she left for South America (she
lived in Cuba, Venezuela and Mexico). In 1947 she moved to Madrid, where she appeared
in some supporting roles in a few movies and settled down permanently. Briefly
coming out of retirement for a small role in “Doctor Zhivago” (1965), her
scenes filmed on a set built just outside Madrid. Luana died in Madrid on July
24, 1991.
