[These daily posts will cover little known actors or people that have appeared in more recent films and TV series. Various degrees of information that I was able to find will be given and anything that you can add would be appreciated.]
Jo Davray was born in Rouen, Normandy, France on January 15, 1923. He was active in films for more than 40 years from 1941 to 1983, but we know almost nothing about him. He was above all a stuntman and fencing master who can be noticed in swashbuckling films. He was Gérard Philipe's stunt double in "Fanfan la Tulipe" by Christian-Jaque.
His name appeared for the first time in 1941 on both cinema screens and theatre stages. He was at that time 18 years old and was part of the École du Comédien, a drama school newly created by Jean-Louis Barrault and Julien Bertheau, actors of the Comédie-Française from the Conservatoire national de Paris, and by Raymond Rouleau, a former student of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
Despite a promising beginning, Joe Davray never managed to break through and obtain important roles and had to be content with small appearances in films where he was mainly valued for his athletic physique and his athletic performances.
After his last role in “A Dog in a Bowling Game”, a film by Bernard Guillou released in January 1983, when was about to turn 60 he disappeared from public view and we heard little about him until his death in France on March 10, 2005.
