In 1993 she left the cinema and until 1997 and began her career in politics. She was named chairman of the committee on culture and tourism of the city of Kaliningrad.

In May 2019, Yakovleva announced that she has been battling stage IV breast cancer for the last two years. At some point of battling the illness, she was unable to speak and walk. The cancer later metastasized to her brain, but she was in stable condition and the tumor stopped growing. In January 2022, it has been announced that she was recovering from brain surgery.
