Thursday, June 22 at 18:00, Palazzo Merulana will bring
together the latest glories of Spaghetti western cinema to evoke the 1960s on
the occasion of the launch of "Once Upon a Time in Rome", the new
novel by Manuel de Teffé. Present at this preview will be the legendary
director Enzo G. Castellari, inspiration of Quentin Tarantino, and the actor
Gianni Garko, unforgettable "Sartana" of that time. The novel
"Once Upon a Time in Rome" presents an untold page of Italian
costume: the epic of the Dolce Vita overwhelmed by the revolution of western
cinema, all inspired by the amazing adventures of the Roman actor Antonio de
Teffé (father of the author) and how, under the pseudonym of Anthony Steffen,
he became the protagonist of 27 films of the genre, among which we remember:
“Django the Bastard”, “Two Pistols and a Coward”, “$1000 on Black”, “No Room to
Die”, “A Train to Durango”, “Shango”, “Sabata the Killer”. Rome, 1965, in the
midst of the Dolce Vita and the protests against the war in Vietnam. "A
Fistful of Dollars" by Sergio Leone had a worldwide success and launched
an explosive genre: the Italian western.
The world of cinema is in fibrillation, the public relations manager of the Hilton Hotel tries to convince her man to embrace the new trend. "Once Upon a Time in Rome" tells the story of an aristocratic Shakespearean stage actor, a Russian acting guru, a Jewish documentary filmmaker and an elderly breadstick entrepreneur with one last big dream: to turn his secret manuscript into a film - "No Dollars for Django."
That's so cool how the author of "Once Upon A Time In Rome" is the son of Italian-Brazilian Spaghetti Western actor Anthony Steffen. And it's also great that he's writing a book about my favorite types of Westerns, the Spaghetti Westerns. I plan on writing a book myself about the subgenre called, "A Fistful Of Italy" which takes a look back at the Italian Westerns and the people who made them. I also plan on making a Spaghetti Western called, "They Call Me Durango" once I have the money. Wish me luck. And as for Manuel De Teffe, congrats.
