When Sergio Leone was making “A Fistful of Dollars” his
first choice for composer was Angelo Francesco Lavagnino a well known Italian
film composer from the Peplum days. Because his film was produced by Arrigo
Colombo and Giorgio Papi who were able to get the town site, costumes, crew and
some of the actors from “Bullets Don’t Argue” they suggested Leone meet with
the composer being used named Ennio Morricone. Leone did not remember he had
gone to grade school with Ennio but Morricone remembered him immediately upon
meeting him and the two were able to work well together and Leone replace
Lavagnino with Morricone and the rest is history.
