Pinkas
Braun was born in Zurich, Switzerland on January 7, 1923. Braungrew was the
child of Jewish immigrants in Switzerland and at 16 years he left his business
apprenticeship to become an actor. He received his acting training at the Zurich
Schauspielhaus, where he was engaged from 1948 to 1956. He learned the craft of
directing parallel as an assistant to Bertolt Brecht, where in Zurich he premiered
his play “Mr Puntila and His Man Matti” on stage in 1948. Braun went on many
tours after he founded "Jungen Truppe des Schauspielhauses” (Boys Troupe
of the Theater". He then played at theaters in Austria, Germany and
Israel.
Braun
was always in demand as a film and television actor, mostly as a shady
character. In cinema, he became known primarily for his roles in the Edgar
Wallace films and their imitators. In 1966 he was the villain in the Perry Rhodan
cinema “Perry Rhodan - SOS From Outer Space”. As the adventurous travel
journalist Jörg Preda, Pinkas Braun wrote on his visits to exotic countries but
was always involved in a variety of criminal cases. The first in the series
began in 1966 in regional programs, under the titles such as "Jörg
Preda", "Move with Jörg Preda" and "Jörg Preda Travels
Around the World". After a twelve year break two new volumes emerged with
26 more episodes that were now called "Jörg Preda Reported". Braunn
appeared in more than 120 television dramas and series, including ‘The
Mysteries of Paris’ (1980), ‘Poenichen is Nowhere’ (1980) an episode of ‘Sugar
Sugar’ the television series ‘Schwarz Rot Gold’ (1987), in two episodes of the
crime series ‘Derrick’ and in the series of ‘Edel & Starck’ (2003). His
distinctive voice made him a sought-after speaker for audio books and radio
plays.
He
also translated plays into German. From 1959 to the 1980s, he was the exclusive
translator of the works of Edward Albee, which he as a contemporary playwright
thus helped in the German breakthrough. The translations were published by S.
Fischer Verlag; the daughter of the publisher he was temporarily married to
Brown
had two marriages and two children, one of his wives was Anneliese Betschart.
From a relationship with Karin Kernke his daughter Judith came. Both are or
were working as actresses. With his partner Ingrid Resch he connected him to a
diverse and for years an artistic collaboration in radio plays, poetry
readings, on stage and on camera. He died after a long illness and was buried
in the cemetery of the Liberal Jewish Community in Munich.
