Will Tomas Milian receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at
the upcoming International Film Festival of Rome? Very likely, and that possibility,
the Italian site dedicated to the legendary actor. In the event it happens, it
would be yet another act of genius on the part of His Excellency Marco Müller,
who we know to be a director with a particular penchant for Italian cinema
encore, so devoting a special exhibition in 2004 at the Venice Film Festival.
Also, note that among the producers of this year's festival is also Manlio
Gomarasca, Editor in Chief of Nocturno, the bible of the film genre here in
Italy. You probably know that his year in Rome there will be neo-section on the
World Genre, and to have Tomas Milian as an honored guest would the icing on
the cake. So while Locarno rewards Giancarlo Giannini, Rome will have Milian’s
person, and the difference is not so subtle.
Milian is a legend in the popular cinema and among the
most beloved performers of poliziottesco and the spaghetti westerns. Tomas
worked with the best directors of the golden age. Suffice it to mention films
like “Vamos a matar, compañeros” by Sergio Corbucci, “Milano odia: la polizia
non può sparare” by Umberto Lenzi, Lucio Fulci's “Four of the Apocalypse”, “40
gradi all'ombra del lenzuolo” by Sergio Martino and “La banda del trucido” by
Stelvio Massi: all or most of the important filmmakers of the cinema generally
wanted to have Tomas Milian in their films. Yet woe it is the he is consider
only an actor of B films; in the course of his long career, in fact, the famous
interpreter has also worked with international artists such as Dennis Hopper
(Escape from Hollywood), Claude Chabrol ((Pazzi borghesi), Abel Ferrara (Oltre
ogni rischio), Tony Scott (Revenge, Revenge), Sidney Pollack (Havana), Oliver
Stone (JFK), James Gray (the Yards), Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) and even his
Majesty the Emperor of Hollywood Steven Spielberg (Amistad). So, tell us if
there is anyone more deserving than Tomas Milian for a lifetime achievement
award; we cannot think of anyone else, and we look forward to having their
confirmation of this wonderful news.
