Giorgio Ferroni was
born on April 12, 1908 in Perugia, Umbria, Italy. He was an Italian producer, director,
assistant director, screenwriter, film editor and actor who was often credited
as Calvin Jackson Padget or Calvin J. Padget
Giorgio Ferroni
started his film career in the mid 1930's as a director of documentaries and an
assistant director to Gennaro Righelli. He debuted as a director in 1937 and
specialized in adventure films. After World War II, Ferroni directed a couple
of neorealist films “Pian delle stele” (1946) and “Tombolo, paradiso ner”
(1947).
Later Ferroni became
very active in swords-and-sandals films and achieved critical attention for the
Horror film “Mill of the Stone Women” (1960). Giorgio directed what many
consider the first Spaghetti western “Il fanciullo del West” (Girl of the
Golden West) in 1942. He would later return to the genre and find huge
commercial success with a series of spaghetti westerns starring Giuliano Gemma
in the mid-1960s.
Ferroni was married
to actress Nada Fiorelli [1919-1984] (194?-1981) and died in Rome on August 17,
1981 at the age of 73. Today we remember Giorgio Ferroni on what would have
been his 105th birthday.
