Voices of the Spaghetti Western ~ “A Few Bullets More”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to be paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as well-known as the actors they voiced.

Traudel Haas  (1945 -    )

Gertraude Haas was born on September 3, 1945, in Berlin. Germany. She is a German actress and voice actress. After ten years as an ensemble member of the Berlin Schiller and Schlosspark Theatre, film dubbing formed her professional focus. Haas' voice is best known for numerous dubbing of American character actresses Mia Farrow, Annette Bening, Diane Keaton, Kathleen Turner and Kristin Scott Thomas.

The daughter of an opera singer, she left school at the age of 15 without graduating from high school. Thanks to a scholarship, she began a three-year training at the Max Reinhardt School of Acting in Berlin from 1961 to 1964 as the youngest student at the age of fifteen and a half. From 1967 to 1977 she was a member of the ensemble of the Berlin Schiller and Schlosspark Theatre.

Parallel to her work at the theatre, the dubbing of foreign-language films and series roles was another focus from the mid-1960s onwards, which Haas only interrupted for a temporary job as a teacher during the 1980s. Notable works include the dubbing of Mia Farrow in “Rosemary's Baby” (1968), “The Great Gatsby” (1974) and “The Last Unicorn” (1982), Katharine Ross in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969), Kathy Bates in “Green Fried Tomatoes” (1991), Frances McDormand in “Fargo” (1996), Rene Russo in “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1999) and Cate Blanchett in “Heaven” (2002).

Haas lives in Berlin and is the mother of two daughters. Her younger daughter Sun is also occasionally active as a dubbing actress.
