The Governing Board of the Provincial Council has approved the tender for the works for the consolidation of the Cortijo del Fraile with an investment of close to 900,000 euros. This is the first major rehabilitation action that will be carried out in the emblematic building to face the comprehensive restoration that will be carried out later following the roadmap marked by the Master Plan of the Cortijo del Fraile that is about to be completed.

The objective of the works is to stabilize the built complex to prevent deterioration from progressing. In the same way, the elements of existing walls and roofs will be safeguarded to allow future restoration interventions. This intervention gives priority to the structures of the building that are in the worst condition.
An important aspect is that the action will be carried out with materials compatible with those originally used in the farmhouse, of an autochthonous nature, and with interventions that are always reversible so that they can be compatible with what is specified in the Master Plan.
The Deputy for Tourism and Historical Heritage, María José Herrada, has highlighted the importance of these works since, as she has stated, "it is the first major work that is going to be carried out in the Cortijo del Fraile. After so many years of neglect and progressive deterioration, the Provincial Council has taken on this project with the acquisition of the property and its surroundings with the aim of recovering this emblematic building and returning it to the whole of society converted into the cultural, historical and ethnographic epicenter of the Campos de Níjar and the province of Almeria".
In this sense, the deputy recalled that the Master Plan of the Cortijo del Fraile, which will establish the future use of the Cortijo, is in its final stretch and that its conclusions will soon be announced in which the opinion of the entire society and associations of the province has been taken into account. Finally, Herrada pointed out that "in the near future the Cortijo del Fraile will always have a special role in its link with literature and cinema through the works of Lorca, Carmen de Burgos or Sergio Leone".
As for specific spaces of the building, work will be carried out in the chapel propping up the upper choir; In the home of the owners, sharecroppers or shepherds, comprehensive actions will be carried out with cleaning, shoring, reconstructions with lime mortar, sealing of fissures or the formation of slopes at the crowns of walls.
The corrals will also be consolidated with the reconstruction of factories or arch shoring. Almost 2,000 m2 of surrounding land will be cleaned and work will be done on the pre-consolidation by rebuilding walls, sealing cracks, grouting and backcaping, in more than 5,000 m2 of the existing factories.
A plan for the Cortijo del Fraile
The Master Plan of the Cortijo del Fraile is developed in parallel to this action. It has been divided into three phases: Analysis and diagnosis of the property and its environment, Social participation process and Proposal for a management and intervention model, in which the conclusions of each of the phases will be offered and, based on these, the future use of the Cortijo.
The whole of society has been given the possibility of
participating through a website that was open to receiving messages and through
the completion of a survey, or through sectoral meetings in which
representatives of institutions, companies and associations linked in some way
to the heritage, art and history of the province of Almeria have participated.
