The Filmkunstfest Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is dedicating this year's DEFA section from May 5 to 10 to the actor Armin Mueller-Stahl. As part of the festival, Mueller-Stahl will also be honored for his outstanding work with the "Golden Ox" lifetime achievement award.

The accompanying retrospective presents four central productions from Mueller-Stahl's DEFA era, which document his acting range and the thematic diversity of GDR cinema. The prelude is ... UND DEINE LIEBE AUCH (Frank Vogel, 1962), the first DEFA feature film to thematically address the construction of the Wall. In the midst of a fictitious love triangle, the production captures the atmosphere of Berlin's streets immediately after the border closure through authentic shots in the style of cinéma vérité. Also represented in the programme is Frank Beyer's NAKED AMONG WOLVES (1962). Shot at original locations, the work about a child smuggled into the Buchenwald concentration camp addresses the moral integrity of the individual in extreme borderline situations. With FATAL ERROR (Konrad Petzold, 1969), a prominent representative of the "DEFA Indian film" can also be seen. The film combines rousing genre cinema with political aspirations by depicting the fight against the corrupt machinations of a US oil company in 1896. The series is rounded off by the 1977 GDR contemporary film DIE FLUCHT (Roland Gräf). In this important article on the taboo topic of fleeing the Republic, Mueller-Stahl embodies a doubting intellectual who becomes a victim of his own decision and the tensions of the Cold War.
