The book The Western Reborn of the 21st Century is now on sale in bookstores and in our online store, a new book signed by Alberto Fijo, director of FilaSiete, Ruth Gutiérrez Delgado, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Communication of the University of Navarra, and Gema Pérez Herrera, film critic and deputy director of FilaSiete.

This book deals with Westerns released in the last 23 years. He uses the adjective reborn to describe the resurrection of a genre that had been languishing since the 1980s. So far in the 21st century, we are witnessing the revival of one of the essential genres of cinema. Essential because without the Western it is very difficult – almost impossible – to understand the evolution of cinematic language, not only in America, but throughout the world.

The American West is a mythical territory. Myths are much more relevant to our lives than we usually think. The Western spawned hundreds of films from the founding of cinema until the 1970s. In those years, the number of masterpieces is very high.

In the wake of geniuses such as Ford, Hawks, Mann, Wellman, Stevens or Wyler, directors such as Kelly Reichardt, Tommy Lee Jones, Paul Thomas Anderson, Andrew Dominik, Quentin Tarantino, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Mateo Gil, Rémi Chayé, James Mangold, Paul Greengrass, Kevin Costner, Scott Cooper and Joel & Ethan Coen have captivated us with magnetic stories where the border, exploration, settlement, building a home, marriage and family, loneliness, community, law and order, religiosity, livestock and agriculture, the horse and the train were once again the protagonists. Wood and steel. The price of life and death. Women and men, children, young and old who seek the promised land, while others lose it because it is snatched from them.
