Who Are Those Singers & Musicians ~ Gianni Davoli
Giovandomenico ‘Gianni’ Davoli was born in Rome, Italy on August, 10, 1943. After middle school, he began to get passionate about music (he studied different musical instruments) and took Domenico Modugno as his idol. In 1964 he created a group and performed in concerts and on television interpreting Modugno songs thanks to the collaboration of bassist Piero Montanari. Davoli also sang songs by many other artists popular at the time and began his career as an arranger for many singers and songwriters; Especially those of the sixties and seventies.
In 1967 he made his debut as a singer-songwriter at Det which published the 45 rpm ‘Ciao divertiti/Come un bambino’. Both tracks were completed thanks to the collaboration of Ezio Leoni and Cesare Gigli. The 45, however, went completely unnoticed. Also in 1967 he created the musical group "Gli Eccentrici", with which he made a single 45 rpm of moderate success, ‘I've Lost You / Morning’, the tracks were written and composed by Gianni Marchetti, Giovanna Marini and Francesco Maselli.
For several years he was one of the participants of Cantagiro, the song festival that launched many singers of music in the 1960s. He became very popular in Italy and Australia for his repertoire, especially for the Domenico Modugno's songs, considered 1st singer of the history of Italian music. His career also dotted by TV broadcasts of success as ‘Domenica In’, ‘Uno Mattina’, ‘Sereno Variabile’. He is the uncle of singer Giorgia (Giorgia Todrani) [1971- ].

Spaghetti Western Locations ~ “The Mercenary”
We continue our search for filming locations for “The Mercenary”. The scene switches to the religious holiday procession is happening and we see Columba disguised as Christ and Paco and Sergei as holy men in white beards and wigs. They are being carried on a float by Paco’s men disguised in blue robes and hoods. The float is lowered to the ground in front of a platoon of soldiers watching the parade. Suddenly the machine gun appears and the rest of Paco’s men open fire and kill all the soldiers. The other spectators are thrown into panic and run from the scene.
The scene was filmed in Polopos, Spain.

50th Anniversary of the release of “Another Try, Eh Providence?”
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the
premier of “Another Try, Eh Providence?” directed bu Alberto De Martino and
starring Tomas Milian, Gregg Palmer under the alias Gregg Hunter and Carole
André. This sequel to “They Call Me Providence” finds our outlaw duo of
Providence (Milian) falling in love with the Countess Pamela DeOrtega (Carole
André) and plans on asking her father Count De Ortega (Luciano Catenacci) for
her hand in marriage. The problem is she has already been promised to Captain
Barton (Manuel Gallardo), who the count owes a very large sum of money to. If
Providence wants to win her hand, he must come up with a million dollars. With
the help of his servant Chiao (Yu Ming Lun) and his old partner the Hurricane
Kid (Palmer) he tries various ways of accumulating the money: a rigged roulette
wheel, swindling the inhabitants of a small town with a crooked bank scheme,
and a gold heist. Every attempt falls short thanks to the ineptitude of the
Hurricane Kid. In the end the count turns out to be a fake and a wanted
criminal Chan Ku, an old acquaintance of Providence, and the husband of the
Countess.

Spaghetti Western Voices– “The Shadow of Zorro”
As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to be paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.
I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S)
Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once
in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as
well-known as the actors they voiced.
Today we’ll cover “The Shadow of Zorro”
[(I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German, (F) French, (E)
English]
Don José de la Torre/El Zorro – Frank Latimore (S) Ángel María Baltanás, (G) Helmo Kindermann
María - María Luz Galicia (S) María Luz Galicia
Dan - Paul Piaget (S) Vicente Bañó, (G) Michael Chevalier
Billy - Robert Hundar (S) Simón Ramírez, (G) Rainer Brandt
Governor - José Marco Davó (S) José Marco Davó, (G) Wimm Schroers
General - Howard Vernon (S) Jose Guardiola, (G) Alf
Marholm
Wimm Schroers (19??- )
Sometimes also written as Wim, no further details on the
life of this theater actor can be found. In the 1950s he was a member of the
ensemble of the Contra Kreis Theater in Bonn. He seldom appeared in front of
the camera, but in 1961 he took part in the notorious short film "The
Wrong Horse", which was commissioned by Adenauer as an anti-SPD election
campaign film. As a speaker, Schroers was heard almost exclusively at the IFU
in Remagen, where he mostly performed important supporting roles. Since his
name only appeared in a few official cast lists and some of these films have
only been available for a short time, the name of the voice was a mystery to
dubbing connoisseurs for a long time.

50th Anniversary of “Massacre at Fort Holman”
Today marks the 50th anniversary of “Massacre
at Fort Holman” directed by Tonino Valerii and starring Telly Savalas, James
Coburn and Bud Spencer. It tells the tale of
former Union Colonel Pembroke (Coburn), the former commander of Fort
Holman, was expelled from the army because it was felt he was guilty of
surrendering the fort without a fight to the Confederate forces. In fact he had
surrendered their weapons only because the enemy was holding his son hostage.
Having escaped from the camp where he was interned, he ends up, wrongly accused
of theft, in the hands of a former colleague Major Charles Ballard (José Suárez
using the alias Joseph Mitchell) who condemns him to death. In telling the
truth, Pembroke convinces Ballard to give him a chance at redemption by
allowing him to recapture Fort Holman. He is then assigned ten men, already
condemned to be hanged for various crimes. Hinting at the possibility of
granting them a pardon, Pembroke convinces the condemned men to follow him, and
with their help gains entrance into the fort - manned by hundreds of soldiers
and by an elaborate alarm system - destroying and killing the entire garrison
along with Major Ward (Savalas). After the battle, only Pembroke and Eli
Sampson (Spencer) are still alive.

Comencini: "The strength of Django in support of Mahsa Amini"
Cinecitta News
By Andrea Guglielmino
10/16/2022
"God is warning you... you'd better listen to him!"
With this phrase to effect arrives at the Rome Film Fest the television remake of the classic Django – Corbucci's cult western starring Franco Nero – directed, at least for the first episodes, by Francesca Comencini, with Matthias Schoenaerts as the protagonist.
"Django - says the actor - is a man in crisis, and this makes him great. Maybe it's the last chance he has to show the world who he really is."
It is a "let's take back what is ours" after the equally mythical 'blacksploitation' version of Quentin Tarantino in 2012. Ten episodes of sixty minutes each, set between 1860 and 1870, which expand the concept of the original starting from the same iconic image: a mysterious stranger who drags himself behind a coffin in the desert.
Inside it, a deadly machine gun, a weapon used at the time but not really common. A kind of superpower, which made history. After the first film in 1966, a plethora of epigones – all called Django, all disconnected from the progenitor – and an official sequel, Django 2 – The Great Return, directed by Nello Rosselli in 1987 with an eye to the emergence of the Stallonian Rambo and his sequel that became Tormantone: Rambo 2 – Revenge.
And now the Sky Original series (with Cattleya, Atlantique and Canal +) which also sees, among others, Noomi Rapace, Vinicio Marchioni and Manuel Agnelli. Comencini begins with a statement in support of "Mahsa Amini - the 22-year-old Kurd who died three days after her arrest for not wearing the veil correctly - and all the girls and boys in Iran who are fighting for freedom".
"This project captured me right away, also thanks to extremely strong female characters – he continues – Django offers a new and interesting point of view on the idea of masculinity in the western genre. It is a universal story that celebrates diversity and minorities. I'm sure it will intrigue and fascinate viewers all over the world. The westerns I grew up with were a great fairy tale for adults who managed to convey an indomitable spirit of revolt that played a great role in my formation as a rebellious girl. Our western tradition is legendary, we respected it but talking about our time. We used the dream of boundless cinema that is the western to talk about our era, with great protagonism to the female characters, and to tell an anti-hero with intimate crises, linked to an affective sphere. It is a crisis that has to do with the new codes of virility. It is a world that is afraid of diversity. There is a female villain, a woman who becomes the guardian of a patriarchal order. It is about making a captivating work to tell characters that can be contradictory, even in a world that claims to be utopian".
Rapace comments: "They created a new door for me, towards an extremely complex character, we started to dig inside her from the first call, she starts as a bad person, capable of incredible violence and extremism, but gradually you begin to understand why she is made like this".
Screenwriters Maddalena Ravagli and Leonardo Fasoli talk
about the relationship with Tarantino: "We also dealt with Tarantino's
Django, because even that, in a spectacular way, makes a political story. Not a
statement but a reflection that starts from the condition of the black
population after the end of the Civil War and stages characters that reflect
conditions that still exist today. Tarantino is clearly a reference, in an
attempt to try to find keys to talk about problems that we feel even closer,
including a strong contrast between identity and minority cultures and those
who perceive this element as the future, and those who think it is a threat. An
eternal contradiction between openness and closure".
