Born Guido Mannari on December 13, 1944 in Rsignano Marittimo, Tuscany, he was a very good looking, athletic actor. He debuted on screen in 1969 chosen by Mauro Bolognini for a scene in “L'assoluto naturale” (aka “She and He”) as a mechanic. At this time Mannari was playing soccer for his local team but not good enough to become a professional he turned to acting. He moved to Rome and became a model and actor. Directors and producers saw in him the possiblity of becoming a teenage idol. He appeared in the films of Pasolini, Jacques Deray and Tinto Brass. Instead of becoming a star he becomes an attractive character actor. His biggest roles was in Mario Amendola's “Storia de fratelli e de cortelli” (1974) as Gigi. He appeared in three Eurowesterns; “Blindman”, “The Brothers Blue” and “Red Coat”. He ends up making only 14 films and then returns to his home town where he died on August 10, 1988 only 44 years-old. We remember him today on what would have been his 65th birthday.
My friend Guido died in Castiglioncello (LI) in August not in July (10 august 1988).

ReplyDeleteIn the audio commentary to Caligula, Malcolm McDowell says in the scene where he kisses Guido on the lips, that he was accused of trying piss off Guido's boyfriend, the film's producer (Franco Rossellini?). Maybe he died of AIDS. Franco died young too...perhaps from the same thing.
ReplyDeleteVery possible. By this time AIDS was never given as a cause of death. AIDS caused the immune system to break down and the victim usually died of a disease caused by the virus. One of the posts above says a possible heart attack.

ReplyDeleteGuido Mannari was one of the most handsome and talented Italian actors. The most famous of his films were Squadra antiscippo (1976) and Caligula (1979). He was of Tuscan descent and loved his native town Castiglioncello, where he sadly died of heart attack near Spianate lake. It’s such a pity that there is so little information about him on the Internet. It would be great to create Guido Mannari fan page to have more interesting information about him. People who know something about Guido, his family or his life could post there. Thus, we will learn more about this wonderful actor and remember him.

DeleteGuido Mannari was a nice person. He was keen on football and played for the Pontedera team in Serie C as a young man. But he left football for his career as an actor. Cinema was his true passion. When he was a young boy, he loved to read magazines about actors of the time. Guido was born and raised in the small coastal town of Castiglioncello, Tuscany. He was good at swimming. He swam across the bay several times. When he came from Rome to his hometown, he could often be found on the local beach, especially in the summer. He liked spending times at the bar. His favourite one was Bar Centrale (Ginori). Guido loved travelling. He liked to spend time in St Tropez. Guido Mannari was a great lover of women. There were always a lot of women around him. But his marriage failed. Guido had a very good relationship with his mother, with whom he lived in the later years. Guido Mannari died at the age of 43 from a heart attack while jogging around the lake.

ReplyDeleteGuido Mannari… Ricordo benissimo. A Castiglioncello veniva chiamato “il divo”. Morì in agosto, in una calda giornata estiva. Era andato al laghetto alle Spianate, dove ha corso e fatto esercizi ginnici, come al solito. A un certo punto si è sentito male, stroncato da un infarto. Guido… bellissimo personaggio. Così affascinante e sorridente. Tutte le donne erano innamorate di lui. La sua povera mamma Lina. Voleva molto bene a Guido, come agli altri suoi figli. Perdere un figlio è il dolore peggiore per una madre.

Le famiglie vicine venivano spesso a trovarla. Lina era una brava moglie e una madre amorevole. Suo padre, Giulio Mannari, era un uomo molto buono. Serio e lavoratore. Ha lavorato nella fattoria delle Spianate. Una bella famiglia italiana. Persone molto perbene. Il figlio minore Guido era un attore di talento. Che peccato che sia morto così giovane. ReplyDeleteHow sad! I read this post and immediately remembered that unfortunate day. His mother, Lina Mannari, was a wonderful woman. Kind, caring and beautiful. Very hospitable. Neighboring families often came to visit her. Lina was a good wife and a loving mother. His father, Giulio Mannari, was a very good man. Serious and hardworking. He worked on the Spianate farm. A beautiful Italian family. Very good people. His youngest son Guido was a talented actor. What a shame that he died so young. A heart attack took his life at the age of 43. Fate had been unfair to him. R.I.P. Guido Mannari. We remember you.
ReplyDeleteGuido Mannari and Franco Rossellini were just friends and nothing more. They also worked together. I've talked to people who knew Guido personally. They said that Mannari was a womanizer all his life, he was also Liz Taylor's lover. Hey had a passionate affair when they starred together in Identikit. It was even written about in magazines at the time such as Revista Party. Moreover, Guido had a wife. He was a kind and generous man. It's wrong to say that Guido and Rossellini had an affair. It's absolute nonsense. Guido Mannari died of a heart attack. That's what the autopsy on his corpse showed. It also revealed that he never had AIDS. The cause of his death was a heart attack. This information is stored in the archives of his town of Castiglioncello. Toward the end of his life, Guido became very overwieght. He was depressed about not being filmed anymore. He also became a member of Jehovah's witnesses and always carried a Bible with him. All in all, Guido Mannari was a good, kind and generous man.
