Dear Tom, I'm a 40 years old Italian film scholar who is retracing the circulation of the Italian western in the Us. I'm a great admirer of your work as film historian and editor of "Western... All'italiana!" magazine.
Despite many sources I've came across (among others your 1986 article "The Spaghetti Western is Alive and Well in LA"), it is still hard to identify which and how many italian westerns were distributed in Us theatres and/or broadcasted on Us television between 1971 and 1981, and which audience they attracted.
Plus, the focus of my research, is to retrace the influence of Italian Western on the American hip-hop culture, since many teenage Black and Latin rappers and street dancers used to watch spaghetti western and many rap musical video of the 80s and 90s "sampled" Leone's and Corbucci's costumes and athomospheres.
So I was wondering if you have any resources or suggestions for mapping the circulation of Italoaters in the Us theatres and televisions, or any other insight to guide my research.
Thank you and sorry for the long comment! Ciao, Giuseppe
I wish I could help Giuseppe but I've never seen anything published in book form that would help. You could sign up for VARIETY magazine on line as they used to publish yearly the top films of each year which might be of some help. Remember only about 25% of all the Euro-westerns that were made were released in the US and even then they were not broadly released mainly as second features on Drive-In bills. I never saw a Winnetou film advertised in Los Angeles and never even saw one listed in the TV Guide for LA TV stations. All the best.
Giuseppe I found this I hope it may help. https://www.austinjfisher.com/post/spaghetti-western-box-office-stats?fbclid=IwY2xjawFNS59leHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHT6l-tApMacMygK9Zz36coSnmmaLi8SE_Gd0w7sFaLoKfbbLzhNQv7ex9Q_aem_kmMVEN3GfqTaXNlnYqEJ0g
Thank you Tom! Fisher's survey seems to refer to the Italian boxoffice but is helpfull to estimate the amount of "money flux" that some films generated. I'll keep you updated!
