Spaghetti Western Voices - “7 Pistols for a Gringo”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to be paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as well-known as the actors they voiced.

Javier Dotú  (1943 -    )

Francisco Javier Dotú Sanjuan is a Spanish writer and actor, born in Zaragoza in March of 1943. Educated in Barcelona, at just 12 years old he began to appear in small children's roles in several films. In 1957 he enrolled in Acting at the Higher School of Dramatic Art in Barcelona, but there at the same time he discovered his literary hobby, beginning to write his own plays. In the mid-60s he began to combine theater and television with the film dubbing of foreign films in the studios of Voz de España. His teacher was José Luis Martínez Sansalvador. In 1971 he moved to Madrid, participating in several RTVE programs and expanding his career as a voice actor with several television series that would give greater popularity, especially dubbing Paul Michael Glaser in ‘Starsky and Hutch’ in 1977. In 1983 he dubbed Alan Alda in the series ‘M*A*S*H’, and in 1990 Kyle MacLachlan in the series ‘Twin Peaks’, thus becoming the regular voice of both actors in Madrid. Other cinematic "fixtures" were: Al Pacino and Kevin Spacey. In addition, he has also dubbed actors such as Alan Alda, Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty, James Woods, Gene Wilder, Peter Sellers, Joe Mantegna, Dudley Moore, Rupert Graves, Pierce Brosnan, Jeff Bridges, Dan Aykroyd, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jack Nicholson, among others.
