Little Known Spaghetti Western Actors ~ Francisc Bacs

[These daily posts will cover little known actors or people that have appeared in more recent films and TV series. Various degrees of information that I was able to find will be given and anything that you can add would be appreciated.]

Ferenc Bács was born in Sibiu/Nagyszeben, Romania on June 19, 1936. He first enrolled at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Târgu Mureş, but eventually graduated from the Szentgyörgyi István Institute of Dramatic Arts, then in 1960 he joined the National Theatre of Târgu Mureş and acted under the stage name Francisc Bacs. He married to actress Bella Tanai, and their daughter Kati Bács was born in 1963.

In 1977 he moved to Hungary with his family, playing one season each in Miskolc and Győr, from 1979 he was a member of the Vígtheatre and from 1987 he was a member of the József Attila Theatre. After a one-year absence, he was again a member of the József Attila Theatre in 1991. From 1992–98 he was an artist at the National Theatre. In September 1998 he became a freelancer and moved to Sopron between 2000 and 2003. From 2003 he worked again as a freelancer. It had its last premiere in 2006 at the Karinthy Theatre. After a long, serious illness, he passed away on April 2019, 16, at the age of almost 83.

Bacs was also a well-known voice actor and film dubber. One of his most famous voice roles is as Professor Klaus Brinkmann (Klausjürgen Wussow) in the TV series ‘The Clinic’. In “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit”, he is the Hungarian voice of Gandalf (Ian McKellen). He voiced Tiger in “Winnie the Pooh” cartoons, among others. He divorced his first wife, his second wife was psychologist Edina Trefil.

Francisc appeared in one Euro-western, 1978’s “The Actress, the Dollars and the Transylvanians” and was the Romanian voice of Sky Dumon as Santa Marria in “Der Schuh des Manitu” (2001).

  1. Francisc Bacs died of natural causes in Budapest, Hungary, on April 16, 2019, at the age of 82. Interesting fact.
