Voices of the Spaghetti Western ~ “Son of Django”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

Herbert Stass  (1919 – 1999)

 

Herbert Franz Martin Stass was born in Oebisfelde, Germany on October 7, 1919. He grew up in Berlin and later attended as a youth after secondary school the Reichersche drama school . He made his debut as Lysander in A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Reichenberger Stadttheater. After the end of the Second World War he was on stage at the Hebbel Theater in 1946/47 and from 1949 to 1951 , later he switched to the Schillertheater, where he worked until 1962. He then made guest appearances as a freelance actor at numerous venues.

From the 1940s his name appeared in cinema productions, for example in … and above us the sky (1947), Madeleine and the Legionnaire (1958), July 20 (1955), The Invisible (1963) or Death in the red jaguar (1968).

Since the 1960s, Stass appeared more and more frequently on television, where he demonstrated his versatility in a wide variety of roles. He played in many series on German television, such as Tatort , Derrick , Der Kommissar , Ein Fall für Zwei , Der Alte , Der Fahnder , SOKO 5113 , Wolffs Revier or The Men from K3 . For the television film Interview with Herbert K. (1970), he received the Grimme Prize .

In addition to his work as an actor, Stass was also a popular voice actor who lent his voice to celebrities such as Frank Sinatra , Clint Eastwood , Tony Curtis , Roger Moore , Dirk Bogarde , Dustin Hoffman and Yves Montand . He was also the first dubbing voice of the Winnetou character, played by Pierre Brice in the film The Treasure in Silver Lake .

He was also a busy radio drama speaker . For example, in the last Paul Temple multi-part broadcast by WDR in 1968 , he spoke about Inspector Crane in Paul Temple and the Alex case. His partners included, for example, Paul Klinger , Margot Leonard and Kurt Lieck.

On November 11, 1999, Herbert Stass died at the age of 80 in Berlin.
