José Álvarez Canalejas was born in Madrid, Spain on
February 14, 1925. He was the son of violin concerto Manuel Álvarez Trigo,
grandson of the pianist and composer Arturo Canalejas,
His sister was actress Lina Canalejas [1932-2012], and
his sister in law was actress Lina Yegros [1914-1978]. José was one of the
Leone company actors and appeared in numerous spaguetti-western during the
years 1960 and 1986. He was sometimes billed as Joe Camel which has caused some
confusion with another actor billed as Joe Kamel.
In the 1970s
Canalejas directed two films: “El último proceso en París” and “El in... moral”.
Jose became one of the earliest recognized Spanish actors
of the genre along with Frank Brana, Aldo Sambrell, Antonio Molino Rojo,
Fernando Sancho and Eduardo Fajardo. He appeared in over 50 Euro-westerns and
although he seldom had speaking roles he commanded attention whenever he
appeared on screen.
