Foreign Land starts with a thin framed story, a young woman with a bundle of letters and a pencil sketch of a trapper, and thus initiates a journey into the past. Reading the letters, the story of the illustrious history of the central character, Swiss servant David, comes to life. It is 1810 and Napoleon's troops are forcibly recruited and deserted during the Russian campaign. Back home, he finds his true love dating someone else. He establishes himself in a village after the fresh wind of the French Revolution but the same old power structures remain: a servant remains a servant, the pastor preaches from the pulpit. David is caught poaching and shoots an adversary. This is definitely the time for the emigration to the foreign land of America, for which he has been toying with the idea for some time now. In America, he becomes a free man and a trapper, but with nostalgia and unable to forget his homeland.
