His voice was probably known by most everyone but his face but to a few. The Munich-based actor Michael Habeck the Germn voice of Oliver Hardy and Barney Rubble from the animated series 'The Flintstones', Danny DeVito, whom he also resembled. This stocky man slipped into the hearts of many children, simply because of his numerous voices for the puppets of Jim Henson which he brought to life, both in the Muppet Show, as well as on Sesame Street where he spoke at times for such puppets as Ernie and his strange laugh. Habeck was also the voice of the Smurfs and later the Simpsons. Habeck appeared in “Texas Doc Snyder” (1993) as Buckliger and was the German voice of Lucullus in “Asterix Conquerors America (1994).
After a time at the Frankfurt Schauspielhaus which Habeck belonged to the mid-80s, and the ensemble of the Munich Chamber he appeared in international film productions such as Jean-Jacques Annaud's 'The Name of the Rose', where he embodied the bald-headed, homophilic monk Berengar. Michael Habeck passed away last Friday, February 4, 2011 at the Schwabinger Institution in Munich. He died after a short illness at the age of 66.
