Jean Stout was born André Jean Destouet in Gironde, France on April 13, 1933. He studied classical singing at the Bordeaux Conservatory and then at the Paris Conservatory in the class of Charles Panzera in the early 1950s. Endowed with a deep bass voice, he participated in several concerts under the direction of Lorin Maazel but preferred to devote himself to jazz and variety. In the 1960s, he became the backup singer of Gilbert Bécaud, then Jean Ferrat, Nicole Croisille, Jerry Lewis, Sylvie Vartan, etc. He also participated in many film scores such as that of “Boulevard du rhum”, composed by François de Roubaix and “Douce les basses”, composed by Claude Bolling.
In 1965, he recorded the theme song for Walt Disney’s ‘Zorro’, which opened the doors to dubbing. Under the direction of Jean Cussac, he participated for Disney Studios in the songs of several short films of the documentary series ‘True-Life Adventures’ before becoming, among others, the singing voices of Baloo, Shere Khan and Colonel Hathi in “The Jungle Book”, Little John in “Robin Hood” (1973) and Eeyore (replacing Pierre Marret), Master Owl and Piglet in “The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” (1983)[2]. With his deep voice, he scored the song “I'm a Poor Lonesome Cowboy” from the animated film “Lucky Luke” (1971 and was a member of the chorus who sang “The Ballad of the Daltons” for the 1978 animated film “Lucky Luke: The Ballad of the Daltons”.
In addition to dubbing, he was also a pianist, organist and double bass player.
Jean Stout died in Teste-de-Buch, Gironde, France on April 10, 2012. He was three days short of turning 79.
