Who Are Those Singers & Musicians? ~ Gianna Spagnuolo

Giovanna “Gianna” Spagnuolo was born in Verona, Veneto, Italy on January 23, 1940. She began her activity as a soloist, recording some 45 rpm first for small Roman labels using the pseudonym Jovanka and then for Combo Record and MRC, including in 1965 Tango svizzero/ Cocaina, in which the song on the B-side, written by Walter Malgoni for the music and Gustavo Palazio for the lyrics, dealt with the theme of drugs, and in 1965 a song written for her by Giorgio Gaber and Leo Chiosso, Divorzio alla milanese.

She then joined the vocal group I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni, becoming the solo voice of songs, often leitmotifs, in some soundtracks between the 1960s and 1980s, especially parts sung in the Italian editions of Disney films. She was the lead singer on several soundtracks composed by Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai.

Gianna died in Rome from dementia on August 10, 2017. She was 77.
