Voices of the Spaghetti Western - “Why Kill Again?”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to be paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as well-known as the actors they voiced.

Glòria Roig  (1937 – 2008)

Glòria Roig i Fransitorra was born in Barcelona, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain on December 18, 1937. She was the daughter of writers Albina Francitorra Aleñà [1912-2013] and Tomàs Roig i Llop [1902-1987]. She is the sister of film editor Maria Rosa Roig [1932-2008] and director, writer actress Montserrat Roig (Montserrat Roig i Fransitorra) (1946-1991) She was a theater, television and voice actress. She studied at the Institut del Teatre in 1953 and 1954. She became known as La Marquesa in the TV series ‘Doctor Caparrós’ in 1979. A well-known actress in the Principality of Catalonia, she performed the monologue written by her sister Montserrat known as “Revindicació de la senyora Clito Mestres”, a show that premiered at the Teatre Romea in 1991 and was a great success with audiences and critics.

She dedicated her career to dubbing, where she dubbed actresses in several films giving a Spanish voice to actresses such as Bette Davis, Faye Dunaway, Glenn Close, Miranda Richardson and Sally Field. In addition, she voiced Yootha Joyce as Mildred Roper in the British sitcom ‘The Ropers’ and participated in the animated series “The Bobobobs” in the character of Petronella. One of the last films in which she participated as an actress was “La educación de las hadas”, directed by José Luis Cuerda in 2006.

She was married to actor José Luis Sansalvador (José Luis Martínez Sansalvador) [1933-2006] (19??-2006) and the mother of journalist Álex Martínez i Roig, voice actor César Martínez, event producer Glòria Martínez and Xavier Martínez.

Glòria Roig died in Barcelona, Spain on February 15, 2008, at age of 71.
