Voices of the Spaghetti Western – “Blood at Sundown”

As we know most of the Euro-westerns were co-productions from Italy, Spain, Germany and France which incorporated British and American actors to gain a worldwide audience. The films were shot silent and then dubbed into the various languages where they were sold for distribution. That means Italian, Spanish, German, French and English voice actors were hired to dub the films. Even actors from the countries where the film was to be shown were often dubbed by voice actors for various reasons such as the actors were already busy making another film, they wanted to be paid additional salaries for dubbing their voices, the actor’s voice didn’t fit the character they were playing, accidents to the actors and in some cases even death before the film could be dubbed.

I’ll list a Euro-western and the (I) Italian, (S) Spanish, (G) German and (F) French, (E) English voices that I can find and once in a while a bio on a specific voice actor as in Europe these actors are as well-known as the actors they voiced.

Noemi Gifuni  (1936 -    )

Noemi Gifuni was born in Florence, Tuscany, Italy on December 6, 1936. She studied piano as a child and took her first steps acting with the Teatro delle Fiabe at the Comunale in Florence. She is the aunt of actor Fabrizio Gifuni [1966- ].

After graduating from high school, she attended the Petro Sharoff Academy in Rome, where she graduated. She began acting with the Pilotto-Carli company at the Piccolo Eliseo and later in the Foà-Massari and Foà-Malfatti companies, acting in Rashomon, in which she had the role of a medium. At the end of the tour with Foà, she won a dubbing audition for Vittorio De Sica's film Miracle in Milan.

In the 1970s she became a member first in the Italian Dubbing Cooperative (CID), the Cinematographic Dubbing Cooperative (CDC) and then in the Synchronizing Actors Society (SAS). In 1976 she was the voice of Maya, the character played by Catherine Schell in the second series of the TV series ‘Space 1999’.

In the nineties, together with six other partners, she founded the LaBiBi.it. With the company she doubles and directs the dubbing of numerous films: David Cronenberg's “Inseparables”, Samuel Fuller's “Road of No Return” and many others. She left the company in 2010 as a partner, continuing her collaboration as an outsider.
