When Tatsuya Nakadai signed to be in “Today We Kill,
Tomorrow We Die” he had never ridden a horse. He showed up on the set a week
earlier than required to learn the basics of horsemanship. It apparently didn’t
help much as Brett Halsey relates when Nakadai and his gang are chasing the stagecoach
he is out front and falls off his horse. Brett says he fell off his horse
several times during filming. The true samurai he was he would just get up on
the horses back and do the scene again.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Nakadai in person seven or eight years ago, when he appeared at the Smithsonian to speak after a showing of YOJIMBO. A great actor and fine gentleman.
ReplyDeleteIt must have been a great experience.
