Sabata, a former Confederate Army major, is determined to seize one million dollars in gold that a clever Irishman, Joe McIntock who has persuaded the citizens of Hobsonville to give him to build up and improve their city. Arriving in the town as a performer in a circus, Sabata finds an ally in his former comrade, Lieutenant Clive McGregor.
