Director, screenwriter, and author Victor Matellano (“Stopover in Hell”, “Vampires”) has begun filming “Clint Spain Connection”, a documentary focusing on the legendary American star’s relationship with Spain. This bond was forged through the so-called "Dollars Trilogy" (“A Fistful of Dollars”, “For a Few Dollars More”, and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”), in which the actor starred under the direction of Sergio Leone.
The screenplay is co-written by Matellano himself, Antonio Durán, and the Almería-based journalist and film commentator Juan Gabriel García—coordinator of the Guía del Cine (Film Guide) for the Institute of Almerian Studies and author of works such as “Los españoles del western” and “La Almería de Sergio Leone” (co-authored with Juanen Pérez Miranda).
Conexión Almería The documentary will cover the “Dollars” Trilogy, though the central focus is “For a Few Dollars More”— "the most Almeríaesque of the three films," Matellano recounts in conversation with LA VOZ.
The film, produced by Jose Frade PC, 39 Escalones Films, and Alda Productions, will explore the reasons that drove Eastwood—who at the time was starring in the American Western series ‘Rawhide’ — to sign on to Leone’s project and come to Spain to work.
“There is little actual footage, as we rely primarily on voice-overs,” the filmmaker notes. To this end, he enlisted voice actors Camilo García—who voiced Eastwood in the Spanish version of his final film as an actor, *Cry Macho*, and who will do the same for the documentary segments featuring him—as well as Miguel Ángel Jenner, who will portray Sergio Leone, and Juan Antonio Bernal as the narrator.
Among the locations appearing on screen are sequences filmed in Madrid, Burgos, and Almería—all of which feature prominently in the documentary. “It plays a highly significant role in the script. There is also a moment where Bernal devotes a considerable amount of time to explaining why the Almería landscape was so important in “For a Few Dollars More”, for instance,” explains Matellano.
"Clint Spain Connection" also features
professionals who worked with Leone on the “Dollars Trilogy”, such as Julio
Sempere, assistant director on the first two films, and José Luis Galicia, set
designer for “A Fistful of Dollars”.

A YEAR LADEN WITH SYMBOLISM
The start of filming for “Clint Spain Connection’ coincided with the 96th birthday of the actor and director behind “Unforgiven” and “Gran Torino”, as well as the announcement of his retirement from cinema—at least according to his son, Kyle Eastwood. "It was all a coincidence. for us, this year is perfect, as it marks the 60th anniversary of the filming of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”—and its international release—as well as the Spanish premiere of “For a Few Dollars More” on September 5, 1966," notes Matellano. The filmmaker—whose research and work promoting cinema have been showcased in documentaries such as “Zarapazos”, “Regresa El Cepa”, and “Aquel último tiburón*”—is "very excited" about this new project.
