Who Are Those Guys? John Frederick

John Frederick was born on July 4, 1916, in Norwalk, Iowa. He was an American actor known for his supporting roles in science fiction, western, and action films across several decades of Hollywood cinema. Frederick built a career appearing in notable productions including the science fiction feature “Killers from Space” (1954), the western “Seven Guns to Mesa” (1958), and Sergio Leone's spaghetti western “Duck, You Sucker!” (1971). His work often placed him in genre films of the mid-20th century, contributing to a range of character roles during a prolific era of American and international filmmaking.

The 1960s represented the height of John Frederick's career as a prolific character actor, with steady appearances in both major motion pictures and prime-time television series. He specialized in supporting roles, frequently cast as authority figures, military personnel, or other distinctive character parts, contributing to ensemble-driven projects without taking on leading positions or earning notable awards. His film work during this period included supporting turns in biblical and historical epics such as “The Story of Ruth” (1960) and “The Greatest Story Ever Told” (1965), as well as war-themed productions like “The Longest Day” (1962, as a German officer) and “The Green Berets” (1968). He also appeared in “The Sand Pebbles” (1966), further establishing his presence in large-scale Hollywood productions.  The momentum for this active phase had begun in the late 1950s with roles in “The Vikings” (1958, as Sven) and “The Buccaneer” (1958), which transitioned into his busiest decade. In television, Frederick became a recurring guest star on several prominent action, crime, and adventure series, including ‘Perry Mason’, ‘The Untouchables’, ‘The Fugitive’, ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’, ‘Mission: Impossible’, ‘The Wild Wild West’, and ‘The F.B.I.’, where his authoritative demeanor suited a range of official or antagonistic characters. These consistent credits across film and television underscored his reliability in the industry throughout the 1960s.

John Frederick died on November 11, 2012, in Palm Springs, California, at the age of 96. He resided in Palm Springs California during his later life and was honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
